Alo Origin and Meaning

The name Alo is a boy's name meaning "beginning; defender of men".

Originating from the historical Baltic region of Livonia, Alo is used in modern-day Estonia as a diminutive of Aleksander and as a word-inspired name, deriving from alustus, meaning "beginning". Elsewhere, Alo has been used as a short form of Aloysius and is also a Native American name of Hopi origin, meaning "spiritual guide" or "look up".

In the US, Alo has been used on a small handful of boys in recent years, along with a couple of girls. Parents may have been honoring their Estonian or Hopi heritage, but they could also have been inspired by Alo Yoga, a trendy athleisure brand, whose name stands for Air, Land, and Ocean. Plus, it's similar enough to the rising Arlo that it translates well.
