Dunes Origin and Meaning

The name Dunes is a boy's name meaning "a mound or ridge of sand in the desert or by the sea".

The 2021 film adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel series, Dune, may have brought this softer sounding nature name to people's attention. Referring to the mounds and banks of sand formed in the desert or at the coast, Dunes puts in mind imagery of rugged beaches or sweeping wastelands of orange sand. Reminiscent of Djuna or Duane, of Brooks and Boone, Dunes could work as a masculine honor for a June or as a nod to the sci-fi series.

While Dunes has yet to catch on, Dune has been given to 60 babies since 2021, before which it was nearly entirely obscure.
