Leul

Ethiopian, Ge'ez
"prince"

Leul Origin and Meaning

The name Leul is a boy's name meaning "prince".

Leul is not a traditional Ethiopian name, but rather, a 20th-century Ethiopian title from the Ge'ez language. Leul, or Leoul, was used for sons and grandsons of the Emperor from 1916 until the monarchy was abolished in 1974. It's also associated with Guenete Leul Palace — literally, "Paradise of the Princes" — the royal residence built by Emperor Haile Selassie.

Leul has been used as a baby name in the US since 2004. It fits the distinctly American trend of royal word names and honors the heritage of Ethiopian parents. That's a distinct niche, but for some parents, exactly what they're looking for.
