New Number 1 Boys’ Name!
Liam is the new Number 1 boys’ name for 2017, the Social Security Administration announced, with Emma remaining at Number 1 one for girls.
This year’s top baby names contains more new entries than in several years. Amelia vaults onto the girls’ Top 10 at Number 8, followed by newcomer Evelyn at Number 9.
On the boys’ side, Logan appeared on the Top 10 for the first time at Number 5, with new boys’ names Elijah at 8 and Oliver at 9.
Former Number 1 boys’ name Jacob barely hangs on at Number 10, while last year’s new names Benjamin and Charlotte have moved up to Numbers 6 and 7.
The boys’ name that has moved up the most number of places is Wells, up more than 600 places to enter the Top 1000 at Number 915.
On the girls’ side, the name that’s moved up the most is the invented Ensley, entering the Top 1000 at Number 965.
Donald may not have made the popularity list, but Melania was the fifth fastest-rising girls’ name, moving to Number 720.
The hottest Kardashian-influenced name was Dream, the name of Rob Kardashian’s daughter with Blac Chyna, the third fastest-rising girls’ name moving to Number 840.
And the letter K starts four of the ten fastest-rising boys’ names: Kairo, Kace, Kashton, and Koa. Caspian and Colson also rank among the ten hottest names for boys, while Kehlani is the tenth fastest-rising name for girls.
But K names for boys are among the most volatile on both sides of the ledger. Among the fastest falling boys’ names is Kylo, the Star Wars name that last year was the hottest boys’ name, falling out of the Top 1000 after only a single year in the spotlight.
Other sinking K names for boys are Kolby and Kamdyn.
