Moroni

Italian surname or Mormon
"son of Mauro; our lord"

Moroni Origin and Meaning

The name Moroni is a boy's name meaning "son of Mauro; our lord".

Moroni isn't heard very often these days, probably because the first five letters have strong teasing potential. It's a common Italian surname meaning "son of Mauro," but its use as a first name is limited to the Mormon community.

In the Book of Mormon, Moroni is the last Nephite prophet and son of the prophet Mormon. He was the last prophet to write in the book of Mormon, and after his death, was resurrected as an angel. Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, claims to have spoken to the Angel Moroni, who told him where the golden plates of the Book of Mormon were located.

It is unclear how the Mormon variation of Moroni came to be, but official Latter-Day Saints texts suggest the West Semitic root mrʾ, meaning "lord" or the Egyptian mr.n.i,, meaning "I was beloved."
