Zagreus Origin and Meaning

The name Zagreus is a boy's name meaning "great hunter".

In Greek mythology, Zagreus was a god of the underworld and the son of Persephone and either Hades or Zeus. The word zagreus refers to a hunter who catches (and dismembers) live animals — the mythical Zagreus is often considered the "first Dionysius," as Dionysius was dismembered as an infant.

Zagreus entered the baby name sphere in 2021 when it was chosen for seven baby boys, and it was given to ten boys in 2022. This choice was inspired by the 2020 video game series Hades, where Zagreus is the protagonist that must escape the underworld and find Persephone.
