Mormon or Egyptian
"honeybee; bee crown or red crown"

Deseret Origin and Meaning

The name Deseret is a girl's name meaning "honeybee; bee crown or red crown".

A religious name unlikely to be heard outside of Utah. In the Book of Mormon, "deseret" means honeybee and signifies industry. Though some scholars propose that it actually stems from the Egyptian deshret which was the red crown worn by rulers of Lower Egypt.

Religious leader and politician, Brigham Young, proposed that the U.S. state now known as Utah would be named the state of Deseret. Today, the beehive serves as the symbol of Utah while Deseret is used for newspapers and stores throughout the state.
