Erminnie
Erminnie Origin and Meaning
With the cadence of names like Elodie, Melodie, and Amelie, but with the clunkiness of Irma, Winifred, and Millicent thrown it, Erminnie is a rare and intriguing diminutive of Ermina.
Ermina itself can be a Slovenian feminine form of Herman, meaning "army man", or an English elaboration of Erma and Irma, meaning "whole, great, universal". The name might also be spelled as Erminie.
It was notably borne by Erminnie A. Smith, a linguist, ethnologist, anthropologist, and geologist, and the first woman to be elected to the New York Academy of Sciences in 1877. She was named after her mother, Ermina. Interestingly, another noteworthy barer was Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, also named after her mother, Ermine, and aslo an anthropologist and ethnohistorian, whose research has been used to help Native Americans during court cases.
