Liliʻuokalani Origin and Meaning
The name Liliʻuokalani is a girl's name meaning "smarting pain of the eyes".
The name of the only queen and last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, which was overthrown in January 1893.
Born Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha, she was named according to Hawaiian custom after an event linked to her birth. At the time she was born the regent was suffering from a painful eye infection. Her names were chosen accordingly: liliʻu (smarting),loloku (tearful), walania (a burning pain) and kamakaʻeha (sore eyes).
