It's too close to the fruit "melon" to make a good first name, but if there are Mellons on your family tree, why not put it in the middle? The English form of this surname is habitational, and at one time denoted someone from Meulan-en-Yvelines, a commune outside of Paris.

The original Russian name is Natalia, the French say Natalie or Noel or Noelle, and the Italians use this gender-neutral name. While Natale and its international cousins is traditionally given to babies born at Christmas time, it's certainly not reserved for that.

We prefer to think of this name as a spelling variation of the Arabic Sabira, the feminine form of Sabir, than as a girlish spin on the word name Saber. Sabira means patient whereas Saber is a long sharp knife.
