Yeshua

YEH-shoo-uh
Variation of Joshua, Hebrew
"the Lord is my salvation"

Yeshua Origin and Meaning

The name Yeshua is a boy's name of Yiddish origin meaning "the Lord is my salvation".

Yeshua is often considered the "real" name of Jesus, via the Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English evolution of Yeshua to Iesous to Iesus to Jesus. It is also used as a common alternative of Yehoshua in the later parts of the Hebrew Bible, making it a variation of Joshuah.

Rarely used in the US as a given name until the 2000s, it has climbed considerably in recent years and is now given to around 170 babies each year, meaning it ranks alongside Kruz, Lenox, Ansel, and Ralph. Popular worship song, Yeshua (my beloved is most beautiful) might have encouraged more parents to see this as a usable option.

With a slightly softer sound than Joshua, it could help avoid the (almost inevitable) nickname Josh.
