Denim
Denim Origin and Meaning
Navy, Indigo, Sky, Ocean, and Sapphire already rank as current US favorites, and Demin is another shade of blue that's on the rise. With the stylish, sturdy, and versatile feel of the fabric it denotes, Denim could be an unexpected route to nickname Demi, or a surprising color name that strands out from Scarlett or Hazel.
Very rarely used as a feminine name before the 2000s, Denim began to catch on after singer Toni Braxton chose it for her son in 2001. By 2002, it was on the rise across the board, and is now given to around 80 girls each year - meaning a third of all Denims born were girls.
The word denim comes from the French phrase serge de Nimes translating to "fabric from Nimes", where denim was first produced. Used in the US since the mid-19th century - before it caught on worldwide - it does have an "all-American" feel to it.
