Mailen is a variant of Majlen or Majlena, a rare Swedish and Norwegian name which blends "Maj" and "Lena" together. The name has seen increased usage since 2017, following the release of the video game "Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds", which features a character called Mailen.

Maj is the Swedish word for the month of May, and associated with the Goddess of fertility and motherhood, while Lena means "light" or "torch". Mailen could therefore mean "Mother's light" or "Light of May".
