Velzy
Velzy Origin and Meaning
Party Velma, part Daisy, part Elsie with a little bit of Wesley thrown in too, Velzy is a surprisingly popular choice among TikTok parents. Possibly inspired by the surfer Dale Velzy and by the Hawaiian beach, known colloquially as Velzyland in his honor, the name might have its origins as a Dutch surname.
Velds is the Dutch word for "fields" which could be one source of the name, however, there is also the surname Van Velsen which might be another. In this case, it would mean "from Velsen", referring to a place in the north of Holland, whose name could derive from an ancient word meaning "swamp or marshland", or from Valens meaning "strong, vigorous, great". Velzy might have then emerged as an English corruption of the surname.
Regardless of its actual origins, parents today are probably considering it thanks to its trendy Z sound and very modern feel. Only six Velzys were born in the US in 2023, but that is a surprising number for such an obscure name.
TikTok family The Bangerters used the name for their second daughter in 2023, who joined big sister Tommy.
