Snow Snow Snow Names for Babies
It's been a snowy winter in the US, which may provide the perfect inspiration for a snow-themed baby name. Here are some wonderful names that mean snow or are connected with snow, cold, and winter weather.
KENAN
The National Weather Service began naming winter storms in November of 2012, a job we'd love to have. They're doing a pretty creative job, though, with this season's choices ranging from Atticus to Zion and including such creative choices as Delphine, Quinlan, and Xandy. February is the month with the most named winter storms, and one of the biggest snowstorms of this season was named Kenan. Kenan is a little-known Biblical name best-known in contemporary times as the name of SNL cast member Kenan Thompson.
SNOW
Snow is a word name that’s been gaining notice over the past few years, used for 48 baby girls and eight boys in 2020. Its use as a simple, distinctive middle name will grow even faster, we predict. Besides its association with the fluffy white stuff piling up in the Northeast, the name is closely associated with Game of Thrones hero Jon Snow along with Snow White, giving it a magical, fairy tale feel. Snowy was used for five girls in a recent years.
NORTH
Kim and Kanye put the name North on the map when they chose it for their daughter, but North is one of the few Kardashian baby names that have not caught on. Only six baby girls and six boys were named North in the US in 2020, making it a unique nonbinary choice -- cool.
WINTER
Winter is the season name du jour, sounding brighter than Summer or Autumn and fresher than Spring. It just squeaks under the wire as a unisex name, used for nearly 1000 baby girls and just over 50 boys in 2020 in the US.
FROST
Why did no one in the US name their baby Frost in 2020? Beats us: It's a simple, unique, evocative word name and surname-name. If you're looking for a wintry name that is truly one-of-a-kind, Frost is an excellent choice.
JANUARY
Firmly attached now to Mad Men actress January Jones, this month name has actually been heard before –in the 1973 bestselling Jacqueline Susann novel Once is Not Enough, a leading character was named January Wayne. Some other, international, possibilities: the Spanish Jenara, the Italian Gennaio.
NEVE
Neve, from the Latin word for snow, came into view via actress Neve Campbell—it is the maiden name of her Dutch-born mom—and makes a sophisticated choice. Also related to the Irish Niamh, Neve was chosen by Conan O’Brien for his daughter. Other such possibilities: Neva and Nevada, which means “covered in snow”.
EIRA
Though there isn’t an over-abundance of snow in Wales, there is a Welsh word (and name) for it: Eira. This name, pronounced AY-ra–which has never made the Atlantic crossing possibly due to potential pronunciation probs– has that meaning. The related Eirwen means ‘white as snow’. There is a famous Welsh harpist named Eira Lynn Jones.
YUKI
Yuki is a Japanese name that means snow. Widely used in Japan for both girls and boys, the name is easily translated to English and has an appealing nickname feel. Variation Yukio, which means “snow boy,” might be mistaken for the popular game Yu-Gi-Oh! – possibly a plus on the third grade playground but not necessarily beyond.
LUMI
The Finnish name Lumi, which means snow, has been discovered in the US, used for about 50 baby girls last year. Its resemblance to Remi and Beyonce-approved Rumi undoubtedly have spurred its popularity. But it's far from popular and remains a rare and exotic choice with a snowy meaning.
