Nicknames, Hero and Villain Names, Mutant Names, Etc.

Here are some of my favorite names that work well as nicknames, or names for superheroes/villains, mutants, and other types of code names.
  1. Ace
    • Origin:

      Latin
    • Meaning:

      "one, unity"
    • Description:

No longer tied to the hapless Ace Ventura, this jaunty, high-flying nickname name is starting to take flight among celebrity and other parents, with its countless positive references to doing well in tests and poker games, on the tennis court and golf course, and in the air.
  2. Atlas
    • Origin:

      Greek
    • Meaning:

      "bearer of the heavens"
    • Description:

Atlas is one of those names that was previously thought too powerful for a baby boy, who would have to be strong enough to carry the world on his shoulders. Now Atlas has joined the pantheon of Greek and Roman god and goddess names in the realm of possibility, along with Mars, Zeus and Apollo.
  3. Bandit
    • Origin:

      Word or occupational name
    • Description:

We hesitate to call Bandit an occupational name, any more than Rogue or Vandal are occupational names, yet its use by one of the bandmembers of My Chemical Romance (for his daughter: we're not even going to go there) undoubtedly owes a debt to occupational cousins from Pilot to Parker. Recommended for use by rock stars with full-time nannies only.
  4. Butterfly
    • Origin:

      English word name
    • Description:

Fluttery and flighty. But there are a couple of names that mean butterfly you might consider, such as Yara and Farasha.
  5. Books
    • Bookworm
      • Colt
        • Origin:

          Word name
        • Meaning:

          "young horse"
        • Description:

Colt is the kind of unconventionally macho name that is so trendy right now, because of or in spite of its association with horses and guns.
      • Cinders
        • Crypto
          • Diamond
            • Origin:

              Gem name
            • Description:

Diamond sparkled all through the nineties--reaching as high as Number 150 in 1999. Although its shine has diminished quite a bit, it remains in use.
          • Dingo
            • Origin:

              Australian animal name
            • Description:

These wild dogs eat babies, they do not inspire baby names.
          • Doc
            • Origin:

              English word name
            • Description:

A boy with this name is certain to be bombarded with "What's up, doc?" every day of his life. Even Doctor would be preferable.
          • Dragonfly
            • Echo
              • Origin:

                Greek mythology name
              • Meaning:

                "echo or sound"
              • Description:

Echo, the pretty, resonant name of a legendary nymph, was the heroine of Joss Whedon's sci-fi series Dollhouse. Nick Hexum, of the band 311, named his daughter Echo Love.
            • Eclipse
              • Enigma
                • Falcon
                  • Origin:

                    Bird name
                  • Description:

There is a whole new species of bird names open to the baby namer, from the light and feminine Lark to the sleek and powerful Falcon.
                • Fox
                  • Origin:

                    Animal name
                  • Description:

Fox is one animal name backed by a longish tradition, and then popularized via the lead character Fox Mulder on X Files. Fox is simple, sleek, and a little bit wild, and could make an interesting middle name.
                • Free
                  • Origin:

                    Word name
                  • Meaning:

                    "free"
                  • Description:

One of the classic hippie word names. In the 1970s, actors Barbara Hershey and David Carradine gave this name to their son...who later changed it to Tom.
                • Feathers
