Aslan
Aslan Origin and Meaning
Aslan, derived from the Old Turkic word arslan, meaning "lion," is best known in the West as the name of the heroic lion in C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" series, who serves as an allegorical stand-in for Jesus Christ. It was also used as a positive epithet for several Turkish emperors in the Middle Ages.
Currently in the Turkish Top 30, the Azerbaijani Top 50, and on the rise in both the UK and The Netherlands, Aslan is a strong choice, with a literary tie and an appealing meaning. In the US, it currently sits outside the Top 1000, but it has been rapidly climbing up the charts in recent years. Given to around 170 boys in 2023, it has a similar feel to rising stars like Azriel, Caspian, and Cassian, and to the more traditional Alan and Leon.
Russian tennis player Aslan Karatsev is one notable bearer.
