Jiraiya Origin and Meaning

The name Jiraiya is a boy's name meaning "young thunder".

The name Jiraiya was created in 1806 for yomi-hon — a type of book from the Edo Period — called Jiraiya Monogatari. The character was revived later in the century for a folk tale series Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari, in which Jiraiya, a ninja, shapeshifts into a giant toad.

Jiraiya is catching on in the US thanks to a modern-day interpretation of the tale in the popular manga and anime series Naruto. Jiraiya debuted on the charts in 2007, the year following the character's American introduction in the anime.
