Makari
Makari Origin and Meaning
To those unfamiliar with it, Makari might have the sound, feel, and look of a modern inventions, similar to Amari, Jakari, or Makai. It is however a Russian name, derived from the Greek Makarios. Borne by two 14th-century Orthodox Russian saints, Makari can also be transcribed as Makariy or Makary.
With its pleasant meaning, Makari could make a distinctive choice for a child with a Russian heritage, and it is currently on the rise in the US. Given to around 200 babies in 2023, it has doubled in use since 2019. How much of this is down to parents honoring their Russian roots and how much is because Makari sounds new and cool is hard to estimate.
Makari is also the name of a Florida rockband, who got their name from the Greek word Μακάρι/Makári, meaning "I wish", which offers another possible meaning.
