Jamaica Origin and Meaning

The name Jamaica is a girl's name of Native American origin meaning "rich in springs".

Among the least gimmicky, most appealing and colorful of all the names found in the atlas, Jamaica almost sings out the rhythms of the West Indies.

Part of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean, Jamaica is an eminently usable place name. Namesake writer Jamaica Kincaid was born not in Jamaica but on another Caribbean island, Antigua, and her birth name was the more prosaic Elaine Cynthia.

Jamaica's capital city, Kingston, has become a popular name for boys, thanks to its use by Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale.
