Medina

Muh-dee-nuh
Arabic, Old English
"city of the prophet; the middle one"

Medina Origin and Meaning

The name Medina is a girl's name meaning "city of the prophet; the middle one".

Medina commonly refers to a city in Saudi Arabia where the prophet Muhammad began his work to establish Islam. It is considered the second holiest city in Islamic tradition, and is also known as The Luminous City, The Enlightened City, and The City of the Prophet.

Alternatively, it is the name of the main river on the Isle of Wight - an island off the Southern English coastline - but in this case, the name would come from the Old English Meðune meaning "the middle one". This association however is less well known, however, and most people who choose the name likely do so for the former association, or just the sound.

Medina is on the rise as a girl's name in the US, given to around 50 baby girls in 2022.
