Sibyl Origin and Meaning

The name Sibyl is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "seer, oracle".

The original but less common spelling of the ancient mythological name, now used mostly for fictional witches. But the rise of the lovely Lady Sybil Crawley on television's Downton Abbey and the fall of the multiple personality Sybil, a self-confessed fake, may give Sibyl and Sybil more credibility as a name.

And the statistics certainly reflect that - for Sybil at least. It's a Nameberry gem, ranking in the Top 200, while in the real world, it has seen increased use in the UK and the US - where 153 girls were called Sybil in 2023. Sibyl is by far less favored, and for the sake of ease, the more popular spelling of this currently unique choice might be preferable.
