Attractive A's

I've been a big fan of baby names beginning with the letter A, so I thought I'd compose a list consisting of some of my favourite names starting with A along with a few others that may be nice.
  1. Aaliyah
    • Origin:

      Variation of Aliya, Arabic
    • Meaning:

      "heavens, highborn, exalted"
    • Description:

Both powerful and pretty, with a melodic sound, Aaliyah joins Layla, Lila, Dana, and Farrah as a name of Arabic origin that is also popular in the English-speaking world.
  2. Abbie
    • Origin:

      Diminutive of Abigail
    • Meaning:

      "my father is joyful"
    • Description:

Abbie is a gently old-fashioned nickname name that owes its rising popularity to Top 10 Abigail. Abby may be the more usual spelling today.
  3. Abigail
    • Origin:

      Hebrew
    • Meaning:

      "my father is joyful"
    • Description:

Abigail has been in for so long -- the name has ranked in the US Top 100 since the late 1980s -- it's amazing that it isn't more out by now. But Abigail's biblical and historic roots make it a fashionable classic rather than a passing fad.
  4. Acacia
    • Origin:

      Greek
    • Meaning:

      "thorny"
    • Description:

Acacia is an attractive, rarely used Greek flower name enhanced by its popular beginning-and-ending-with 'a'-construct, and is gradually beginning to catch on as a new member of the stylish girl names starting with A.
  5. Adam

      Hebrew
    • Meaning:

      "son of the red earth"
    • Description:

Adam -- a primal Old Testament name -- was revived as a 1960s cowboy name. Adam is not as popular as it once was and feels ready for a respite, replaced by newer A names like Aidan/Aiden, Avery and Axel. Its most prominent current bearers include Adams Sandler, Levine, Brody and Driver -- who plays a character named Adam on Girls.
  6. Adelaide

      Variant of Adelheidis, German
    • Meaning:

      "noble, nobility"

  7. Adelina
    • Origin:

Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Slavic variation of Adeline
    • Meaning:

      "noble, nobility"

  8. Adeline
    • Origin:

      French, diminutive of Adele
    • Meaning:

      "noble, nobility"
    • Description:

Adeline has a lovely, old-fashioned "Sweet Adeline" charm, but has become so popular in the US under so many spellings and variations -- with Adalynn and Adalyn also popular -- that considered together it is far more popular than it first seems. Adorable nickname Addie is also pervasive.

      Latin
    • Meaning:

      "man of Adria"

    • Description:

Alexa was a steadily popular modern classic until Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa was released in 2013. • Meaning:

      "defending men"
